  • NJCU Professor Deborah Bennett to Be Honored at Women's History Month Ceremony in Jersey City

    Dr. Deborah Bennett of Jersey City, a professor at New Jersey City University with a joint appointment in mathematics and elementary and secondary education, will be among the honorees at the 2013 Women's History Month ceremony co-hosted by Hudson County Executive Thomas A. DeGise, the Hudson County Board of Chosen Freeholders, and the Hudson County Office of Cultural and Heritage Affairs/Tourism Department.

    The Women’s History Month ceremony, which is based on the theme, “Women Inspiring Innovation Through Imagination,” will be held on Tuesday, March 19 in the Press Room of Hudson County Plaza in Jersey City.

    According to a letter from the Hudson County Board of Chosen Freeholders to Dr. Bennett, “This year’s program honors women in Hudson County who, through their professional endeavors, have made impressive contributions in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). Our honorees have not only made a name for themselves, but have created opportunities and avenues to empowerment for women, young and old, in fields that were traditionally dominated by men.”

    A member of the NJCU faculty since 1993, Dr. Bennett also coordinates the University’s mathematics teacher certification program and served a four-year term as president of the University Senate.

    Dr. Bennett is the author of Randomness and Logic Made Easy: How to Know when Language Deceives You, winner of a 2004 Choice Award, and co-author of Algebra for ALL. Dr. Bennett contributed a chapter, “Defining randomness,” for the Philosophy of Statistics: Vol. 7 Handbook of the Philosophy of Science and “Independence and interdependence: An analysis of pre-service candidates’ use of focused assignments on an electronic discussion forum during the initial field experience,” an article she co-wrote with Dr. Audrey Fisch, an NJCU professor of English, was published in the inaugural issue of Interdisciplinary Journal of Teaching and Learning. Dr. Bennett’s article, “Sticking to your guns: A flawed heuristic for probabilistic decision-making,” has been accepted for publication in the forthcoming Advances in Mathematics Education: Probabilistic Thinking, Presenting Plural Perspectives, Perspective IV: Theories Models and Frameworks.

    Dr. Bennett has been a statistical consultant for the New York City Department of Finance, a consultant for a private market research firm, a Peace Corps volunteer in West Africa, an operations research analyst for the U.S. General Accounting Office, and a researcher for the Institute for Defense Analysis. She has also taught mathematics at the State University of New York at Farmingdale and Pace University.

    Dr. Bennett holds a Ph.D. in mathematics from New York University, an M.S. in operations research from George Washington University, and a B.S. in mathematics from the University of Alabama.
