INFORMATION LITERACY TUTORIAL


Self-evaluation

After completing the information literacy tutorial sessions, a self-evaluation is necessary to assess your information literacy competencies. This session includes the following three tests:

Information Literacy Competency TEST 1
Information Literacy Competency TEST 2
Information Literacy Competency TEST 3

Competency 2 : Constructs/implements effective strategies for searching library sources.

You should be able to:

  • Select appropriate library databases
  • Identify appropriate strategies for selecting search terms
  • Combine search terms effectively
  • Use truncation effectively
  • Determine if the library subscribes to a specific journal using a citation

Quiz yourself:

1. What is the best way to truncate the word "computer" in order to search for variant words: computers, computing, computerized?
a) Com*
b) Computer*
c) Comput*
d) None of the above ways

2. To focus or narrow your search, which search strategy is correct?
a) Type another word (or phrase) using AND to connect, e.g. "nutrition
AND vitamins"
b) Type another word (or phrase) using OR to connect, e.g. "nutrition
OR vitamins"

3. The above image of search screen on OSCAR Web, the Library's online catalog, shows the ways that you may search for books. If you only remember several words of the title of a book recommended by your professor, you should use:
a) Search by: Title
b) Search by: Subject
c) Search for keyword(s) in: Title
d) None of the above

4. You need to search for recent scholarly articles on "early childhood education" in Academic Search Premier from your home PC. Select the best search strategy:
