Academic Programs

  • The Biology Department offers numerous academic options to students desiring either a Bachelor of Science or a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology. Faculty advisors assist students in selecting appropriate courses for careers in research, education, government, industry, the medical professions, and other related fields. The Biology Department sponsors a Biology Club and a tutoring service for its majors.

    The Department offers several degree tracks. Programs and course requirements for various fields of employment and continued education are explained in detail below. The General Studies requirements for graduation can be found in the University catalog on page 45, “Undergraduate Requirements”. 

    Biology Programs

    1. General Programs. These broad-based programs provide sound preparation for successful entry to employment, graduate school, and/or professional school.
    2. Certification to Teach. Students pursuing careers as teachers with academic interests in biology should consult programs of professional study in the College of Education regarding teacher certification in Biology.
    3. Undergraduate Affiliated Programs. Joint and collaborative programs with the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey and Jersey Shore Medical Center leading to BA or BS degrees and certifications in Clinical Laboratory Sciences and Allied Health Professions are available to all biology majors who have completed the appropriation coursework.
    4. Graduate and Professional Affiliated Programs. These programs are designed for students preparing for careers in research or professional careers in medicine, dentistry, podiatry, or osteopathic medicine.
