First Year Experience Program

  • The First Year Experience Program (FYEP) at NJCU offers first year students the opportunity to enroll in academic learning communities: pairs or clusters of linked courses taken by the same cohort of students and integrated around a common theme, inquiry, or set of concerns.

The instructors within each learning community work closely to construct a unified curriculum and support system for their students, to create assignments that speak to and build on one another, and to align assessment standards and tools. Each course grouping is designed with an emphasis on reading and writing as integrated skills, critical thinking and problem solving, collaborative work skills and strategies, basic library research skills, and oral communications skills.

For more information about the program, contact the FYEP Coordinator, Prof. Hilary Englert. You can also review our most recent academic learning communities from Fall 2011.
