Reported in the magazine’s February/March 2012 issue, the designation was based on a combination of an institution’s U.S. News & World Report ranking, the Hispanic Outlook analysis of college degrees earned by Hispanics, and Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) status.

In his Poder Hispanic Magazine article, Pablo Schneider writes, “…Latinos fall short in the number of adults with college degrees (12.7 percent versus the U.S. average of 27 percent). But, according to Mr. Schneider, the number of Hispanic college students is currently at an all-time high–15% of undergraduates. Mr. Schneider also reported a spike of 24% in Hispanics pursuing undergraduate degrees between 2009 and 2010.

Hispanic-Serving Institutions are defined as non-profit institutions of higher education with a Hispanic undergraduate enrollment of 25% or more. New Jersey City University, New Jersey’s only HSI, has an undergraduate enrollment of 8,328, 36.1% of which is Hispanic.
