NJCU RECEIVES $50,000 GRANT FROM ROBERT WOOD JOHNSON FOUNDATION NEW CAREERS IN NURSING SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
The New Jersey City University Department of Nursing has been awarded a $50,000 grant from the prestigious Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) New Careers in Nursing Scholarship Program (NCIN), a program of RWJF and the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN).
Through the grant, which supports traditionally underrepresented students who are making a career switch to nursing through an accelerated baccalaureate or master’s degree program, NJCU will award five NCIN scholarships for the 2014-2015 academic year. NJCU is one of only 52 institutions from throughout the United States to comprise the final cohort of the Program.
Dr. Sue Henderson, NJCU president, said, “I thank the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation for its generosity and know that this grant will be life-changing for these five students, enabling them to join a community of caring and dedicated scholars and students who truly care about the profession of nursing and the public they serve.”
In addition to a $10,000 scholarship, NCIN scholars receive other support to help them meet the demands of an accelerated degree program. All NCIN grantee institutions maintain leadership and mentoring programs as well as a pre-entry immersion program to assist scholars with the study, test-taking, and other skills necessary for academic success.
Since 2008, the NCIN program has awarded 3,517 scholarships at 130 unique schools of nursing. This year, the program funded 400 scholarships.
Established in 2007, NJCU’s accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing (B.S.N.) Degree Program is one of only six programs in New Jersey that enables individuals who hold a bachelor’s degree in another field to change careers and become registered nurses in only 12 months. The Program is offered at both NJCU’s main campus in Jersey City and at NJCU at Brookdale in Wall.
Established in 1976, NJCU’s Nursing Department also offers an R.N. to B.S.N. program.
