NJCU Announces Fall 2017 Arts Events

New Jersey City University (NJCU) Center for the Arts, the creative umbrella for the University’s performing, visual, film, and literary arts activities, announces its arts and culture calendar for fall 2017.

A cultural hub of metro-north Jersey, NJCU boasts strong arts departments, led by accomplished international faculty, and presents an array of guest artists and speakers in addition to student performances. Throughout the fall, more than 30 performances, visual arts exhibitions, film screenings, artist talks, and literary readings will be presented at NJCU and at local Jersey City venues. All events are open to the public, and for most, admission is free.

Highlights of the fall programming include the annual waterfront concert at J. Owen Grundy Pier by the NJCU Alumni Jazz Big Band with guest artist Jon Faddis, famed trumpeter, (Sept. 15); an evening with icon Judith Jamison -- dancer, choreographer and Artistic Director Emeritus of the renowned Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater (Nov. 15); and screenings of the 2017 winners of the Black Maria Film Festival, which is housed at NJCU and is celebrating its 36th anniversary this year (various dates and locations).

The Department of Music, Dance and Theatre presents the Broadway and Hollywood hit musical Sister Act (Oct. 20-29); celebrates Leonard Bernstein’s 100th birthday with A Night of Bernstein featuring Trouble in Tahiti (Nov. 16-19); and hosts a guest performance by pianist Danica Borisavljevic, who explores the avant-garde piano repertoire of composers from her native Serbia (Sept. 27).

In NJCU’s galleries, Underground Up brings street art into the gallery (Oct 2 – Nov 2), along with exhibitions by MFA students (ongoing) and On a Different Page, a group show curated by Eileen Ferara that explores how books can be creatively used to make individual works of art (Nov. 9 – Dec. 14).
