NJCU Announces October 2017 Arts Events

New Jersey City University (NJCU) Center for the Arts, the creative umbrella for the University’s performing, visual, film, and literary arts activities, announces its arts and culture events for October.

Highlights for October include a production of the Broadway and Hollywood hit musical Sister Act (October 20-29); a reading by NJCU memoirists, entitled The Young and the Reckless: Emerging Italian American Writers (October 5); a conversation about arts and business with Genevieve Theirs – the tech guru, investor and opera singer who started Sittercity.com (October 10); a free lunchtime concert by the acclaimed Gabriel Alegría Afro-Peruvian Sextet (October 18); and Underground Up, an exhibition that brings street art into the gallery (October 2 – November 2).

A line from one of Rudyard Kipling’s poems, “a rag, a bone, a hank of hair” is an expression used in the artist’s family to mean, “You look haggard.” Painted, cut up, and sewn together, Burton’s canvases portray beautiful grid patterns that do not entirely match up and are as imperfect as the expression.

The three artists known as Mustart (NJCU BFA 2009), Clarence Rich, and DISTORT grew up with the visual language of graffiti, yet formally studied painting. This trio’s take on Street Art reflects the evolution of this phenomenon, connecting classical art with contemporary culture.
