NJCU Professor Antoinette Ellis-Williams to Perform ‘The Scarf Diaries’ at NJPAC in Newark on November 18

One-woman Play Tells Stories of Women's Lives

Antoinette Ellis-Williams, Ph.D., an NJCU professor of Women’s and Gender Studies, will perform in a one-woman play, The Scarf Diaries, at the New Jersey Center for the Performing Arts (NJPAC) in Newark on Saturday, November 18.

Written and produced by Dr. Ellis-Williams, and directed by Bill Lee, the play is an intimate work that tells stories about women’s lives and relationships through a series of monologues and vignettes. Religion, culture, sexuality, work, childbirth, mourning, abuse, sickness, beauty and choices are explored with scarves employed as the visual conduits to moving narratives.

In Professor Ellis–Williams’ words, “Women wrap, drape, cover, hide and adorn themselves with scarves throughout the world. For some women, they are symbols of private convents, pain, shame, secrets or ugliness – and for others, they are declarations of independence, joy or tributes of honor. If scarves could tell our stories, they would speak of these truths…”
