The University is installing new signage throughout the Jersey City campus that’s designed to enhance the student experience, as well as making it easier for first-time visitors to find their way around NJCU’s major buildings and facilities.

NJCU’s Facilities and Construction Management department is overseeing the ongoing initiative. The first phase of the “Wayfinding Project” involved installing building identification signs outside entrances of the academic and administration buildings, as well as other main structures that are located on campus.

The signs echo the green-and-gold school colors, boast the NJCU logo, and have white lettering. They also are decorated with an image of the distinctive entrance to Hepburn Hall, the University’s signature, Gothic, Collegiate-style building that is located on the corner of Kennedy Boulevard and Culver Avenue.

Kostas Svarnas, Director of Construction Management, said he and his staff had brainstormed various design ideas that they hoped “would resonate with the students, alumni and faculty/staff.”

“One of the main features that we came up with was incorporating some historical-architectural details from Hepburn,” he explained. “This allowed us to bring a modern feel to the sign while recognizing the historical value that exists.”

Future initiatives for the Wayfinding project include creating new directional signage, as well as improving the existing campus map kiosks, according to Svarnas.
