JERSEY CITY, N.J. | New Jersey City University (NJCU), led by its Office of Military & Veterans Services, has been recognized by the Military Times by being named to its 2023 “Military Times Best for Vets: Colleges” rankings, released on November 6.
NJCU is one of only four four-year universities in New Jersey to be honored. It is the second time NJCU has been acknowledged by the Military TImes — the trusted source for independent news and information for service members and their families — with inclusion in the largest and most comprehensive annual ranking of schools for military service members and veterans.
Elaine Gargiulo, Director of Military & Veterans Services at NJCU, said: “NJCU’s Office of Military & Veterans Services is proud to have been selected again for the Military Times’ Best for Vets rankings. We are grateful for the opportunity to work with our student veterans and welcome them wholeheartedly to our campus. It is an honor to serve them, and we look forward to continuing to do so."
“As our university community and nation pauses this week to say thank you to the men and women who have selflessly served our country, we are proud that the NJCU Office of Military & Veterans Services has consistently been a leader in providing educational opportunities and resources to our veterans,” praised NJCU Interim President Andrés Acebo. “Thank you to the Military Times for acknowledging the exemplary work of our Military & Veterans Services team. We thank Elaine Gargiulo, Randi Fontanez, and the entire Office of Military & Veterans Services for their efforts everyday, and the leadership of Dr. Jodi Bailey and the Division of Student Development and Community Engagement.”
Jodi Bailey Accavallo, Ph.D., Vice President for Student Development and Community Engagement added: “NJCU is incredibly honored to be recognized for its work with our veterans and students in the military. As part of the fabric of our community, our military members embody what we strive for all our students: hardworking, dedicated, and determined. Thank you to the Military Times for highlighting our work and our students who helped make this possible. We will continue to celebrate all they bring to NJCU."
Each year, the Military Times analyzes information collected from a nationwide survey sent to colleges and universities across the nation asking about their programs for veterans, along with public data about colleges and universities obtained from the Department of Education and Department of Veterans Affairs, in order to produce its official rankings. Responses to the campus surveys are analyzed by the Military Times data team, producing the highly anticipated, respected, and unbiased annual ranking.
The 2023 rankings can be found on the new Best for Vets website: bestforvets.com. This year, 325 schools made the list – up nearly 5% from 2022. Of those, only 30 are from the Mid-Atlantic Region and just six are from New Jersey — four four-year institutions and two county colleges.
“For 10 years, Military Times Best for Vets: Colleges has continued to serve and support the military community through its trusted ranking and reporting on the top schools for veterans,” said Mike Gruss, editor-in-chief at Sightline Media Group — parent company of Military Times. “Our comprehensive survey and thoughtful methodology make our rankings best in class.”
The rankings have become a go-to resource for schools to spread the word about their veteran programs and help veterans make important decisions about their educational planning and how to use the education benefits they earned through military service.
