Dear Members of the NJCU Family,
Each March at New Jersey City University, we proudly celebrate Women's History Month, through events and recognition that honor the remarkable journey that women have made throughout the history of our nation, and their profound impact on the world we know today — including our own world of academia.
From pioneering academics and innovative researchers to compassionate leaders and dedicated activists, women have played an integral role in shaping our institution's success and advancing progress in every field.
This year’s Women’s History Month theme is “Women Who Advocate for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion.” The timing of this year’s theme could not be more poignant, as NJCU celebrates the 50th Anniversary of the Speicher-Rubin Women's Center for Equity and Diversity. This Fall, the Women’s Center celebrated a momentous milestone — 50 years of empowering women and promoting diversity — with a birthday party on campus. That celebration continues this month and will culminate on Thursday, March 21 when the Women's Center partners with In Full Color and the Jersey City Arts Council for the spring edition of its 50th Anniversary Celebration at the NJCU School of Business Skyline Room. We encourage you to celebrate this historic milestone.
Women’s History Month provides an opportunity for reflection, celebration, and action as we honor the countless contributions of women from diverse backgrounds, cultures, and experiences.
At NJCU, we have so much to celebrate with the success of women in our own community. From the classroom to the athletic venues, to the Student Government Association (SGA) and the community, women are thriving at NJCU. We proudly are the home to faculty such as Professor Martha Mooke of the Music, Dance, and Theatre Department, who won a Grammy award just weeks ago, and English Professor Ann Wallace, the current Poet Laureate of Jersey City.
Our dynamic students are leaving their own mark on campus. Last spring, our student body made history when it elected an all female SGA Executive Board leadership — Ruth Diegue ‘24, Valerie Egharevba ‘24, Breanna Felix ‘24, Crystal Genthe ‘25, and Alejandra Martinez ‘24. In competition, our women’s basketball team won its third conference championship in four years last weekend — the first athletics team in NJCU history to ever accomplish that. This fall, our women’s soccer team advanced to the conference semifinals for the first time ever and last weekend our trailblazing women’s wrestling team achieved history when Izabella Frezzo and Sandy Guerrero captured regional championships! And on the stage, senior Sydney Millevoi, a Music Business major, is a contestant on Season 22 of American Idol!
At NJCU, we recognize the importance of amplifying women's voices, supporting their aspirations, and dismantling barriers to their success. We are committed to fostering an inclusive and equitable environment where women can thrive and achieve their full potential. During Women's History Month and beyond, let us celebrate the achievements of women past and present, acknowledge the challenges they have overcome, and reaffirm our commitment to creating a more just and equitable world for generations to come. Together, we can build a future where every woman and girl has the opportunity to pursue her dreams and make her mark on history.
Yours in service,
Andrés Acebo
