Guest Speaker: Inna Shapovalov, Immigration Lawyer

INNA SHAPOVALOV SEATED

Inna Shapovalov has lectured on U.S. immigration law at seminars in the United States and Latin America. She has made numerous presentations on immigration law at various community organizations. Inna Shapovalov is a member of the Florida Bar, the California Bar and the Federal Bars of the Southern District of Florida, the Southern District of California and the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals. Inna graduated from the University of Illinois and California Western School of Law. She attended academic programs at Heidelberg University in Germany and the University of Tel-Aviv, Israel. She worked with the Centro de Asuntos Migratorios in San Diego, California as well as Inland Counties Legal Services in Indio, California. She is fluent in several languages, including Russian and Spanish. 

Inna Shapovalov's topics for the session, "Immigrants and Immigration", will include:

  • Her own life in an immigrant family.
  • Changes in the nature of her work over time, as an immigration lawyer under five U.S. presidents: Clinton, George W. Bush, Obama, Trump, and Biden.
  • Stories of her cases.
  • Why many people with "illegal" status do not always try to change their status.
  • How people end up "illegal."
  • Power and privilege at work in the immigration system (the Law vs. Reality).
