About This Degree

The primary objective of the New Jersey City University (NJCU) Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science degree program is to develop professionals with a strong health and exercise science foundation who are able to gain employment in a variety of exercise science related fields. Besides, the B.S. in Exercise Science will prepare students for advanced professional training and graduate degree programs, such as Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, and Athletic Training.

The classroom program is highly interactive, with a low student-to-teacher ratio, and an emphasis on experiential learning. The laboratory portion of the high-level courses will give students the opportunity to learn through practical applications, and to work and interact with athletes and clinical populations.

All full-time and adjunct faculty maintain appropriate college degrees, professional certification(s) and years of experience teaching, coaching, competing, and training in numerous specialties. Certifications and licenses of faculty in the Fitness, Exercise & Sports Department include: Bokwa Fitness Levels I, 2, 3, 4, Instructor, Certified IM=X Pilates Mat and Reformer Instructor, Certified Yoga Instructor, Lakshmi Voelker Chair Yoga Certified Teacher, National Archery Association Certified Instructor, ARC CPR/AED Instructor, PADI Master Scuba Diver Trainer, ARC Lifeguard Instructor Trainer, Bolly X Certified Instructor, Bokwa Punch and Strike Instructor, NSCA Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist, 2 Star Certified Spinning Instructor, U.S. Fencing Association Level 1 Fencing Coach, ACSM Exercise Physiologist, and American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor.


Beyond The Classroom

Beyond the classroom, internships provide students with relevant experiences in fitness testing, exercise prescription, stress testing, nutrition analysis, stress management techniques, exercise leadership and computer-based analyses. NJCU is ideally situated to afford students ample opportunities for critical learning experiences at surrounding Fortune 500 and specialized organizations. Students will be encouraged to attend sessions and workshops at professional conferences annually, and they will have various networking opportunities.


After Graduation

Graduates from the Exercise Science program will have the necessary skills to enter directly into the job market as part of an organization or in consulting roles as:
