Finale – Ode to Joy – Adapted from Friedrich Schiller
Oh friends, not these tones!
Rather, let us strike up more pleasant and joyful ones!
Joy, beautiful spark of divinity, daughter of Elysium,
We enter, drunk with fire, heavenly one, into your sanctuary.
Your enchantments bind again, that which custom strictly divided.
All men become brothers, where your gentle wings are found.
He who has succeeded in the great pursuit, to be friend to a friend,
He who has won a lovely bride, adds to his jubilation!
Indeed, he who has even a single soul to call his own in this world!
And he who has never achieved it, he slinks away, weeping, from this realm.
All beings drink of joy from the breast of Nature;
All the just, all the evil ones follow her trail of roses.
Kisses she gave us, and fruitful vines – a friend, proven in death;
Base lust was given to the worm, and the cherub stands before God.
Happily, just as His suns fly through the magnificent course of Heaven,
So hurry, brothers, on your course, joyfully, like a hero to the victory.
Be embraced, millions, by this kiss for all the world!
Brothers! Above the starry canopy there must dwell a loving Father.
Are you sinking low, O millions? Do you wish to sense the Creator, O world?
Seek him above the star-canopy! Above the stars must he dwell.
