How to Enroll for NJCU Student NJ Transit Discounted Passes:

  1. Log into your NJCU GothicNet.
  2. On your top left click on the “Main Menu” tab.
  3. Click on the “Campus Life” folder.
  4. Click on the “NJCU/NJ Transit Rider Program” folder.
  5. Click on “NJ Transit Discounted Passes” tab (should bring you to the website to enroll to the program).
  6. Click on “Enroll Now”.

Via: $2 Ride Sharing Service Comes to Jersey City

Additional 25% discount for NJCU students' first two rides

Earlier this year, Jersey City operationalized a partnership with the ride sharing service, Via, to better serve areas of Jersey City that may not have convenient access to mass transit. 

Via is a technology-based bus system that provides ride-sharing services at a $2 flat rate within Jersey City. It also offers discounts for seniors and low-income residents at $1 or less.

Learn More About the 25% Discount 

  • Take the #119 bus from Port Authority Bus Terminal, Gate 1 directly to the University.
  • Alternatively, take the PATH subway to Journal Square and follow the directions below.
  • Take the #10 South Boulevard bus from platform D1 directly to the University's main entrance.
  • Alternatively, take the #80 Newark Avenue/Gates Avenue bus to Audubon and West Side avenues.
  • From there, either walk the three short blocks to campus, or take the free shuttle bus from the University's parking lot on West Side Avenue.
  • Take the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail to West Side Avenue (last stop).
  • Walk four blocks south (turn left walking out of the station) on West Side Avenue to Culver Avenue.
  • Turn left on Culver Avenue and walk three short blocks to the main campus, or walk one more block to Audubon Avenue to take the free shuttle bus from the University's parking lot on West Side Avenue.

Hudson-Bergen Light Rail: Substitute Bus Service due to Temporary Suspension of Three West Side Avenue Branch Stations - Beginning Saturday, June 15, 2019

Beginning Saturday, June 15, and continuing until further notice, service at three Hudson Bergen Light Rail (HBLR) stations will be temporarily suspended due to required utility work by the Jersey City Municipal Utilities Authority (JCMUA) under the HBLR West Side Avenue branch. JCMUA must make emergency repairs to a sewer main that runs directly underneath the HBLR tracks.

Affected Stations:

  • West Side Avenue
  • Martin Luther King Drive
  • Garfield Avenue

Substitute Bus Service (see links below for printable schedules):

  • During this time, express substitute bus service will be provided from each of the three stations directly to Liberty State Park Station where customers can transfer to regular light rail service.
  • Shuttle buses will also provide local service between each of the three stations. See below for substitute bus schedules.

Customers who do not have Internet access may visit an NJ TRANSIT Customer Service office to obtain paper schedules.

Ticket Vending Machines (TVMs):

As a result of this work, all three stations will have no operating electrical power for vehicle movement. Stations will be closed, and most TVMs will not be operational. To purchase tickets, customers may use the TVMs at the West Side Avenue Station Park& Ride or Liberty State Park Station. Monthly passes may continue to be purchased via the NJ TRANSIT mobile app.

  • After exiting the Holland Tunnel, go straight up the hill.
  • Maneuver into the center lanes (an exit for the turnpike will be on the right, followed by an exit for Routes 1 & 9 on your left).
  • Continue approximately 1 mile and turn left onto Kennedy Boulevard.
  • Continue 2.5 miles on Kennedy Boulevard to the University.
  • Take Route 280 East, Route 80 East, or Route 3 East to the N.J. Turnpike.
  • Exit the Turnpike at 15E.
  • Follow signs to Routes 1 & 9 North (Truck Route).
  • Cross over two bridges to a traffic light at the intersection of Route 440.
  • Stay straight at the light.
  • After the McDonald's (on the right) go to the second traffic light and turn right onto Kennedy Boulevard.
  • NJCU is 12 blocks south on the right. Parking is available in the garage on Culver Avenue.

  • Take Route 78 East to Routes 1 & 9 North.
  • Routes 1 & 9 will split. Stay to the right (1 & 9 North Truck Route). Do not go to the Pulaski Skyway.
  • Take 1 & 9 over two bridges and stay straight at the traffic light (intersection of Route 440).
  • After the McDonald's (on the right) go to the second traffic light and turn right onto Kennedy Boulevard.
  • NJCU is 12 blocks south on the right. Parking is available in the garage on Culver Avenue.
  • Take the GSP North to Exit 140, Route 22 East.
  • Take 22 East to Routes 1 & 9 North.
  • Follow directions above from Routes 1 & 9.
