Public Safety

At New Jersey City University (NJCU), we take pride in offering a comprehensive Public Safety program through our Office of Adult and Continuing Education. Our non-credit courses are designed for first responders such as paramedics, emergency medical technicians, police officers, firefighters, and rescuers, as well as workers in various industries who require safety certifications. Gain the essential skills and knowledge needed to ensure workplace and community safety.

Classes will be held throughout the semester on the main campus of NJCU at 2039 Kennedy Boulevard in Jersey City.

Available Public Safety Programs

OSHA 10-Hour Construction

  • Dates: November 4 - 5 (Monday & Tuesday)
  • Time: 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM
  • Cost: $249.00

This two-day OSHA Outreach course provides critical training on workplace safety in construction, focusing on hazard identification, avoidance, and prevention. Participants will receive an OSHA Construction 10-Hour wallet card upon completion.

OSHA 10-Hour General Industry

  • Dates: November 6 - 7 (Wednesday & Thursday)
  • Time: 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM
  • Cost: $249.00

This course offers workers and employers essential awareness training on general industry safety, emphasizing hazard prevention and control. Participants will receive an OSHA General Industry 10-Hour card upon completion.

OSHA 30-Hour Construction

  • Dates: December 2 - 5 (Monday - Thursday)
  • Time: 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM
  • Cost: $695.00 (plus books)

This four-day, intensive OSHA Outreach course covers a wide range of safety topics specific to the construction industry. It provides a deep dive into workplace hazard identification, reduction, and prevention.

OSHA 30-Hour General Industry

  • Dates: October 14 - 17 (Monday - Thursday)
  • Time: 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM
  • Cost: $695.00 (plus books)

Designed for the general industry, this course covers an extensive list of safety topics to help employers and employees understand their responsibilities under the OSH Act and implement best practices for hazard control.

American Red Cross CPR Certification

  • Date: December 6 (Friday)
  • Time: 9:00 AM - 1:00 PM
  • Cost: $99.00
  • Location: NJCU Campus
  • Registration Deadline: December 4

This four-hour certification course equips healthcare workers, police officers, firefighters, and EMS professionals with lifesaving CPR techniques, including chest compressions, rescue breathing, and AED usage. Certification is valid for two years.


Meet Your Instructor: James "Jim" Poesl

Jim Poesl

Jim Poesl is a highly experienced Certified Safety Professional with over 30 years in the environmental service industry. He holds certifications in Occupational Safety and Health from the Rutgers Office of Public Health Practice. Jim has partnered with NJCU to deliver training in OSHA Construction, General Industry, Hazardous Materials, Disaster Response, Maritime Industry, and more. As the host of Safety FM's "Safety Wars," Jim brings real-world knowledge and a passion for safety to every class he teaches. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 


Food Handler ServSafe Training

This course is designed to equip participants with fundamental food safety knowledge required for food handlers in any food service establishment. It covers essential topics such as personal hygiene, cross-contamination prevention, time and temperature control, cleaning and sanitization, and safe food handling practices. By the end of the course, participants will be prepared to implement proper food safety protocols to minimize foodborne illness risks and maintain a safe food environment. Successful completion may lead to ServSafe certification.

Silvana Restrepo, Founder of SR Food Safety Solutions, has over 12 years of experience helping entrepreneurs, restaurants, and small food businesses implement food safety practices. She specializes in ensuring compliance with regulations, improving safety standards, particularly within the Latino/Hispanic food industry in NJ.

A passionate entrepreneur and baker, Silvana enjoys connecting with fellow food enthusiasts. Outside of work, she’s a devoted mother of four, active in her Catholic church, and loves baking for her family.
