Islam Today
“Islam Today” (LANG 275) is focused on the study of Islam and its manifestations: the Qurʼan, Sunna, Law (Fiqh), and culture-specific rituals. We will discover Islamic civilizations in a variety of places, including Baghdad, Damascus, Samarkand, and Andalusia. This class will also shed light on Muslims’ experiences in Western countries, especially on their challenges with racism and Islamophobia.
During this class, we will be (re)thinking our definitions of sociocultural identities by discovering that the Other is not someone different from us, but someone who helps us to learn about ourselves. Our goal is to question and find new meanings of identity, the I, and the Other, while focusing on inclusion and not exclusion.
