What is HyFlex?

The hybrid flexible, or HyFlex, course format is an instructional approach that combines face-to-face and online learning. Instruction for each class session, as well as all learning activities, are made available in-person (in class), synchronously as well as asynchronously online. Students are often given the opportunity to decide how they would like to participate. Instructors will often teach in the classroom, with several students also physically attending the sessions (in-person), and other students attending remotely using a video and audio conferencing tool such as Zoom. The equipment installed in the HyFlex classrooms allows for the instructor, the students that are physically in the classroom, and the students attending the classes remotely to all engage with each other seamlessly.

Many of the classrooms on the main campus, as well as at the School of Business and Wall Township, have been selected to be set up allowing for HyFlex teaching and learning. The HyFlex classrooms include one camera (located in the rear or side of the classroom), an appropriate number of microphones based on the room size (installed in the ceiling), speakers, and the Interactive BrightLink Projector System (in the front of the classroom), a podium (with a computer, keyboard, mouse and monitor), as well as a confidence monitor (located towards the rear or side of each classroom). All of this will allow for two-way engagement between students both in the classroom as well as students (attending classes remotely via the Zoom Video/Audio Conferencing tool). The use of this technology has been selected and designed for instructors to use with minimal training and/or assistance that will be provided by the Department of Information technology.

To request assistance from the Department of Information Technology, for the first time use of any HyFlex Classroom, please complete this online form.

 

For instructors who will need a drawing pen, to use with the White Board and Interactive BrightLink Projector System, please complete this online form.

 
Note: The pen(s) will be given to each instructor for the entire semester. At the end of the semester, the instructor will be responsible to return the pen(s) to the Department of Information Technology.
