WHAT IS NEW PATHWAYS TO TEACHING IN NEW JERSEY? (NPTNJ)

NPTNJ is a partnership between New Jersey City University and  many of the New Jersey Community Colleges. New Pathways to Teaching in New Jersey offers a statewide alternate route teacher preparation program designed to provide candidates with the skills and strategies necessary to become  excellent, successful teachers. Candidates take NPTNJ coursework at local NJ Community Colleges either on campus or as a hybrid program. The program provides a process for individuals who already hold a bachelor’s degree (or higher) to become licensed teachers without having to complete a traditional teacher training program. The NPTNJ program is regulated and approved by the N.J. Department of Education (DOE).

HOW TO BEGIN THE PROCESS OF BECOMING A TEACHER

STEP 1:
Contact the New Pathways Liaison at the location you would like to attend, either NJCU or any one of the community colleges listed below.

STEP 2:
Apply to NPTNJ  and in the meantime, begin your preparation.

STEP 3:
Candidates will submit all of the appropriate documentation to the NJ Department of Education (DOE) demonstrating that the requirements have been met to obtain the Certificate of Eligibility (CE). The CE will allow the candidate to immediately seek employment as a Teacher in a public, private, or parochial school. The requirements are as follows:

  1. College transcripts indicating a Bachelor’s Degree
  2. The Praxis II test
  3. The Core Academic Skills test
  4. GPA 3.0

The Provisional Certificate will be issued after candidates have completed the 50 hours of pre-service (The Introduction to Teaching), accept an offer of employment, confirm enrollment in New Pathway’s  400-hour program, and are enrolled in a district mentoring program.

NPTNJ consists of a Pre-Service component (Introduction to Teaching) and 4 semesters of course work. If you register for the Pre-Service component, you will be part of the 400 hour program. The Pre-Service component is part of NPTNJ and is not a stand alone course. Semester 1 does not require that you have a teaching job (you can, but it's not required); However, Semester 2 DOES require a teaching job.
